Case: Tuning of wet end controls on board machine

Challenge in the production process
The performance of wet end control needed to be improved because there was too much deviation in quality variables. The machine direction deviations in dry weight, basis weight, and moisture were too large.
Vipetec’s solutions
The first step was to analyze the performance of wet end main control loops with Vipetec’s analysis tools. This was followed by the maintenance of actuators and valves. In the final optimization phase Vipetec experts tuned the loops to perform better considering the cross-correlations between them.
Achieved results
Due to the project, machine direction deviation was reduced by an average of
- 39% in dry weight
- 43% in basis weight
- 36% in moisture
in whole operating area.
Note: No other development measures were taken during the tuning project and no quality controllers were tuned.
